Lauréat du Tour de France 1950, le Suisse Ferdi Kübler en est aujourd’hui le plus ancien vainqueur encore vivant. Un champion au caractère bien trempé, qui a marqué le cyclisme de l’après-Guerre par ses exploits et sa personnalité et qui fêtera son 92ème anniversaire le dimanche 24 juillet prochain, jour de l’arrivée sur les Champs Elysées.
Kübler fut aussi le premier maillot jaune de la reprise, en 1947, à l’issue de la première étape Paris-Lille qu’il remporta devant le Breton Mahé. En 1949, porté par son tempérament offensif, il mena la vie dure à Coppi, notamment dans la grande étape des Alpes, Cannes-Briançon. Sixième à 10’14 de Magni à une semaine de la fin (Coppi était 10ème à 14’16), Kübler avait attaqué dans le col d’Allos, comme un forcené. Alors qu’il comptait plus de 4 minutes d’avance au sommet de Vars, il était victime de trois crevaisons successives dans la descente ! La voiture de son directeur sportif ayant rendu l’âme, il avait dû attendre de longues minutes avant d’être dépanné, ce qui le mit dans une colère noire. La rage au ventre, il avait vu passer devant lui tous ses adversaires, dont le duo Coppi-Bartali. A court de boyaux, il avait été distancé dans l’Isoard, concédant plus de seize minutes aux deux Italiens. Un extraordinaire document photographique immortalise cette scène où l’on voit le bouillant Ferdi, la pompe à la main, menaçant et en pleurs, prendre le ciel à témoin de ses malheurs !
Vice-champion du monde sur route quelques semaines plus tard à Copenhague (battu au sprint par van Steenbergen), Ferdi revint en 1950, assagi et plus réfléchi. Aiguillonné par l’avènement de son grand rival zurichois Hugo Koblet, vainqueur cette année-là du Giro et du Tour de Suisse, il lui fallait réaliser un exploit en France. Le chrono Dinard-St.Brieuc fut l’occasion d’un premier jalon. Il y domina Magni, Bobet, Ockers et Bartali, lequel fut ensuite à l’origine du retrait des Italiens dans les Pyrénées après avoir été soi-disant insulté et menacé au sommet d’Aspin. Magni était alors leader avec 2’31 d’avance sur Kübler qui refusa de porter le maillot jaune le lendemain.
Ce coup de théâtre décupla l’ardeur de Kübler et allait le révéler d’une régularité et d’une clairvoyance inespérées. Patron de la course avec la complicité du belge Ockers, il contint les assauts de Bobet et Geminiani. Profitant de la fournaise, tous deux rejetèrent même les Français à plus de dix minutes lors de l’étape Perpignan-Nîmes. Revanchard, Bobet ébranla Kübler sous l’orage entre Gap et Briançon, sans toutefois le faire céder. Mais la menace se précisait. Entre Briançon et Saint-Etienne, le Français lança l’offensive de la dernière chance. Kübler était seul pour défendre son maillot jaune (l’équipe de Suisse était partie à six coureurs). Alors qu’il accusait 4’30 de retard, il amorça une furieuse contre-attaque et Bobet fut rejoint et distancé dans le col de la République. Le coup de poker avait échoué mais Kübler avait eu chaud. Il écrasera l’opposition contre la montre (98 km) le surlendemain entre Saint-Etienne et Lyon (2ème Ockers à 5’34, 6ème Bobet à 9’00 !)
Kübler était le premier Suisse à inscrire son nom au palmarès du Tour de France (il y eut ensuite Koblet en 1951). Il y reviendra en 1954 après quatre ans d’absence, en cohabitation forcée avec Koblet (qui se retirera sur chutes). Vainqueur à St.Brieuc et Millau mais distancé sur crevaison le premier jour entre Amsterdam et Anvers (9 minutes perdues), Kübler terminera tout de même deuxième à Paris à 15’49 de Bobet. On le reverra encore en 1955. Désireux de gagner devant son public, il animera une longue échappée entre Colmar et Zurich. Mais il sera battu au sprint par Darrigade et en conservera une grande frustration. Il surprendra encore dans les Alpes (2ème à Briançon à 13’47 de Gaul) avant de s’effondrer sur les pentes du Mont Ventoux, terrassé par une spectaculaire et mémorable défaillance !
Né dans la pauvreté, à Marthalen, dans la campagne zurichoise, Kübler est passé, comme il aime à le dire, « du statut de valet de ferme à celui de vainqueur du Tour de France !», et même de champion du monde sur route, en 1951, à Varese. Son autre grande fierté. Il fut aussi le grand spécialiste du week-end ardennais qui regroupait alors Flèche wallonne le samedi et Liège-Bastogne-Liège le dimanche ! Il en fut le lauréat à deux reprises, en 1951 et 52, en gagnant à chaque fois les deux épreuves. A son palmarès également : Championnat de Zurich 1943, Tour de Romandie 1948-51, Tour de Suisse 1942-48-51, Rome-Naples-Rome 1951, Bordeaux-Paris 1953, Milan-Turin 1956 et Challenge Desgrange-Colombo 1950-52-54, entre autres.
Très actif et très populaire, même après sa carrière, il a longtemps œuvré au sponsoring et aux relations publiques du Tour de Suisse avant de se passionner pour le golf. Quoique diminué dans sa santé, il reste aujourd’hui encore l’un des plus grands champions du sport suisse.
